Since our founding as an apothecary in 1858, Dohmen has touched nearly every aspect of the healthcare supply system, following the American trajectory that's taken us from the Civil War to smart phones. While navigating changing markets and models - we remained unafraid to change what we do, but unwilling to change who we are and what we stand for.
We stand for health.
We've learned a lot over the last 162 years. We learned that despite spending double every other industrialized nation on earth, the U.S. isn't getting any healthier. Our life expectancy ranks nearly last - and it's getting LOWER.
We decided to do something about it. We started The Dohmen Company Foundation in 2008 as a way to help people live healthier lives. We made grants. Grants to bring clean water, vitamins, and basic medications to villages in remote areas. Grants to reduce infant mortality rates in urban areas. Grants made with the best of intentions - to help people. This work taught us even more and fueled our focus. We learned that charitable contributions don't always have the desired effect of driving systemic change.
Once you truly understand the problem, you can become part of the solution.
So we took two bold steps. First, in 2018, we made the commitment to advance our vision in a whole new way - flipping our focus from treatment to prevention, and exiting the pharmaceutical industry after sixteen decades.
Then, in 2019, The Dohmen Company changed its structure - becoming the first organization in the nation to transition from a for-profit S-Corp to a non-for-profit philanthropic enterprise, and prioritizing social health over shareholder wealth.
We've moved out of health care and back into health. Shifting our focus from treatment to prevention. We found a way to combine the rigor of business with the heart of philanthropy.
We are focused on creating social return by investing in healthy communities powered by healthy people.
